What is Kabaddi?

Kabaddi is a high intensity, contact team sport originating from India, now enjoyed globally. Played in a square arena with two 20-minute halves (40 minutes total), Kabaddi involves two teams competing to outmaneuver each other. The objective is for a player, called the “raider,” to enter the opponent’s side, tag defenders, and return safely to their side without being tackled.

Defenders, meanwhile, attempt to stop the raider and prevent them from escaping back to their half. Kabaddi demands strength, agility, and strategic play.

Key Terms and Rules in Kabaddi

  • Lobby: The extended area that becomes active when a defender is tagged, providing more space for both raiders and defenders to score or stop the raider.
  • Bonus Line: Active when there are 6 or 7 defenders on the court. If the raider steps over the bonus line with one foot while keeping the other foot airborne, they score a bonus point upon successfully tackle.
  • Super Tackle: When only 3 or fewer defenders remain on the court, tackling a raider is termed a “super tackle”, earning 2 points – 1 for eliminating the raider and an extra point for the challenging tacke.
  • Do or Die Raid: If two consecutive raids result in zero points, the third raid becomes a “do or die” raid. Failing to score on this raid results in the raider being declared out.
  • All Out: If a raider successfully eliminates all defenders in a single raid, it’s an “all out,” earning the raiding team 1 point per eliminated player, plus an additional 2 points.

Kabaddi’s unique combination of tactics and athleticism makes it a thrilling sport to watch and play.
